Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

The oral care experts at Gentle Touch Smiles for Kids sometimes use sedation as a way of helping children reduce their anxiety and experience less pain during certain dental procedures. Sedation can be highly effective in making children feel comfortable and relaxed while they receive treatment. This is especially true for children who are noticeably apprehensive about undergoing a dental procedure. Our team makes sure to heavily monitor the sedation process so that the child is kept completely safe and does not experience any unwanted side-effects.

There are two types of dental sedation offered at Gentle Touch Smiles for Kids. These include local anesthesia and laughing gas.

Local Anesthesia

A local anesthetic is applied directly at the site of a dental procedure as a way of numbing the immediate area. This is done to prevent the child from experiencing pain during treatment. A local anesthetic only provides a numbing effect, leaving the child completely aware of what is going on throughout the procedure.

While local anesthetics do a great job in managing pain, they are not designed to reduce anxiety or ease a child’s nerves. Because of this, children who are very nervous about receiving a dental treatment may need more than just a local anesthetic. That being said, a local anesthetic can provide a child with comfort in knowing that they are much less likely to experience pain during their treatment.

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas is a safe method for administering dental sedation in children. The substance consists of an odorless and colorless gas that can easily be inhaled by using a special mask that is worn over the mouth. Laughing gas provides both pain management and comfort for children. It is also helpful for children who are nervous about receiving dental treatment.

Although laughing gas is extremely safe, it is very important that the child follows all of the instructions provided by their oral health expert. This is because it can produce unpleasant side-effects if used incorrectly, including headaches, dizziness and nausea; however, these side-effects can almost always be avoided by following instructions provided. Overall, most children find that laughing gas is a great way to reduce anxiety before they receive a dental procedure.
